UNHRC to Hold Session on Mariupol
The UN Human Rights Council will hold a special session today regarding the ongoing crisis in Ukraine’s besieged city of Mariupol.
The decision to hold the meeting came after Kyiv called for the UN to observe the worsening humanitarian crisis spurred by alleged war crimes in Mariupol and other cities. The meeting will be held without the presence of any Russian representatives following Russia’s UN suspension over the invasion of Ukraine.
The UN will continue its efforts to evacuate Ukrainian citizens throughout the war within its subdivisions such as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for refugees. Despite the heavy casualties and decreasing supplies, Kyiv will continue its resistance with the support of foreign volunteer fighters and outside aid. This will inevitably increase the number of refugees that will look for means to flee to neighboring countries—such as Poland—during the short to medium term as Moscow is planning on increasing its military campaign. As a result, expect the International Criminal Court to start an investigation against Russia on the grounds of alleged war crimes. However, while Russia will deny the accusations of atrocity, the investigations will not have an overall affect on the Russia’s long-term war strategies.
