London to release post-Brexit foreign policy plan
London will today publish its long-awaited post-Brexit “integrated review” of defence, security, and foreign policy objectives and plans.
This extensive document will lay out the UK’s future geopolitical ambitions on the world stage. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously spoken on his desire for a “Global Britain” approach to foreign affairs, as he seeks British leadership in global diplomacy as the world increasingly moves towards a state-based international order. In previous speeches, Johnson has outlined his views that a post-Brexit UK will have the ability to independently uphold and maintain liberal norms by being able to nimbly act without the bureaucratic consent of the EU.
February’s G7 meeting gave an insight into what today’s publication may likely contain. Defence contractors, policymakers and diplomats should expect that it will focus extensively on cybersecurity and the tech sector and how to more effectively bridge the gap between defence technology and the wider society. This focus will rely on providing alternative counters to Chinese and Russian activities by forming a transatlantic cyberdefence “quad” partnership with Germany, France, and the US. Notably, it will likely negatively portray the EU’s influence and offer alternatives for independent action, such as sanctions or trade policy manoeuvres.
