Finland Prime Minister Sanna Marin to conclude US visit
Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has concluded a three-day visit to Washington DC, where she attended the Bilderberg Group meeting.
The annual meeting was created in 1954 to foster a confidential exchange of views between European and North American political and business elites. Topics of discussion address issues like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, NATO challenges, and disinformation.
Finland recently launched a bid to join NATO in response to security concerns raised by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with US President Joe Biden on Thursday, where they discussed the possibility of Sweden and Finland joining the defense alliance and NATO’s response to Russia as well as. Marin may use the Bilderberg meeting as an opportunity to enhance Finnish security interests and pitch Finland’s commitment toward a transatlantic response to Russia. Marin will also likely face challenges with Finland joining the alliance, as Turkey now opposes it.
Expect to hear more about the possibility of Finland joining NATO coming out of these meetings. It may not happen immediately as Turkey now is against the move, but Marin will likely garner more support through meetings like these.
