Trial of perpetrators of 2009 Guinea stadium massacre continues
The trial of the perpetrators of the 2009 Guinea stadium massacre continues today.
On November 4, armed commandos assisted former dictator Moussa Dadis Camara and other officials in their escape from prison. While Camara was recaptured, Colonel Claude Pivi remains on the run. The jailbreak raised fears that the trial, which opened in 2022, would be interrupted. The trial is over a massacre that took place in 2009 during Camara’s presidency. According to a UN-mandated commission of inquiry, at least 156 people were killed and at least 109 women were raped.
The prosecution came at the urging of current president Colonel Mamady Doumbouya who promised to rebuild the Guinean state and restore civilian rule in the country. Although the successful conclusion of this trial is a positive step for Guinea, a country marred by impunity, political repression remains a major concern with current president Doumbouya’s government being characterized as an emerging dictatorship.
