Cayman Islands to hold elections

Caymanians will vote today to elect the 19 members of the island’s newly established Parliament.

Today’s election is the first time the Cayman Islands will elect a Parliament, rather than a Legislative Assembly, following amendments to the constitution. These titles have little difference, but boost sentiment towards increased autonomy for the British Overseas Territory. Likewise, today is also marks first general election to be brought forward. Premier Alden McLaughlin’s decided to dissolve government amidst assault charges presented against former Premier and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, McKeeva Bush, and in doing so, triggered an early election. Despite the recent scandal, Bush will contest his seat in West Bay West–a district he has held since 1984.

Don’t expect either the center-left People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) or the center-right Cayman Democratic Party (CDP) to win a 10-seat majority, especially given the historical success of Independent candidates. A coalition between the PPM and Independents is most likely spurred on by recent boycotts of the CDP under Bush. Key election concerns vary between jurisdictions, though, expect the rising cost of living, a need for first-class vocational training and the impact of increased immigration on unemployment to dominate voter choice.
