Egypt’s new foreign residency permit requirements will come into force today.
Over nine million migrants currently reside in Egypt with the largest populations from Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Forced from their homes by conflict, these migrants often have little recourse but to travel to Egypt because of its geographical proximity and shared language.
The recent conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces has now begun pushing Egypt’s migrant crisis to the brink.
Egypt, not possessing the resources needed to maintain such large migrant populations and influxes, has implemented new foreign residency permit requirements to stem the population’s growth. These new requirements impose $1,000 in administrative fees for migrants with a three-month grace period to register.
Expect Egypt’s new residency permit requirements to only be followed by a small population of affluent migrants. Most migrants fleeing conflict or residing in the nation illegally do not have $1,000 in administrative fees and will try to stay under the radar until they are deported.
It is likely Egypt is using the new requirements as a pretense to eventually remove migrants, but this is unlikely to find major success as regional conflict does not allow migrants to return home.
