The final phase of polling for assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are to be held today.

India’s political parties have stepped up campaigning efforts only days before the final round of the election.

Given that in July, India will hold a presidential election, and Uttar Pradesh is the most populous of the Indian states, today’s polling is of particular significance. Uttar Pradesh is India’s most important electoral prise, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is seen as a possible successor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP is expected to win, however, due to governance issues and unpopular policies, success will be more difficult than in 2017, when it won 312 of the state’s 403 legislative seats and if it does not earn an overall majority, it will be forced to make difficult decisions. The Uttar Pradesh election is a referendum on the BJP’s reign in several aspects, including its handling of the economy and the epidemic, divisive language, and political future. What happens in Uttar Pradesh does not stay in Uttar Pradesh when it comes to Indian politics.
