US pro-choice abortion activists to begin “Summer of Rage”
The Women’s March organization’s day of direct action to kick off the so-called ‘Summer of Rage’ begins today in Washington D.C.
The march comes after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, likely resulting in abortion bans in 25 states. The reversal leaves millions of people without access to safe abortions, particularly young, poor people in historically underrepresented communities of color.
The Summer of Rage rally is expected to see 10,000 people marching to the White House. Their tactics include flooding digital spaces with the phrase “we won’t go back,” contacting elected officials, and completing online actions. Marchers will call on President Biden to use executive action to declare a public health emergency and codify reproductive rights. While the march is expected to be an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, expect there to be arrests.
Roe’s reversal means abortion access now varies from state to state. In many states, performing an abortion is punishable by one year to life in prison. Providers risk losing medical licenses and many women will be charged with fetal homicide. There may also be international implications—some nations will fear losing US funding over abortion if a pro-life president is elected.
