Islamabad to receive public feedback on proposed tax, utilities cost hikes

The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) is planning a substantial increase in property taxes, water, and sanitation charges, to be finalized after public feedback to be acquired today.

MCI aims to bridge the revenue-operation and maintenance cost gap, proposing a fourfold increase in water charges and varied increases in property taxes based on category and size. For water, the proposed rates range from Rs48 for 1000 gallons a month, compared to the former Rs16, to Rs940 for I category householders, compared to the previous Rs376.

The proposal reflects an attempt to address revenue shortfalls and align service costs. In the broader context, such taxation may set precedents for other areas struggling with fiscal challenges. Expect resistance to the proposition, as it affects not only homeowners but also commercial and government entities. Nevertheless, MCI members have assured that these increases are still being determined and that another meeting will be held this week after receiving a public response.
