110th session of International Labor Conference to conclude
The 110th session of the International Labor Conference will conclude today.
The annual conference has been ongoing since May 27 and features the 187 members of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Issues such as the effects of COVID-19 on labor and the global supply chain, rebuilding economies with a focus on labor rights, eradicating labor exploitation, and gender equity among workers took center-stage. Additionally, the Russia-Ukraine war, the disruptions it has caused in the global supply chain, and the negative effect it has had on laborers featured as a special topic of discussion.
With national labor markets still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply chain situation will continue to worsen in the short-term. As a result, expect the ILO to strive for greater engagement in the multilateral system as it attempts to strengthen partnerships with corporations and governments towards the implementation of humane standards. Already, over 1700 new social protection initiatives have been enacted since the start of the pandemic in 2020. In the long-term, the ILO will strive to meet standards of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in hopes of ensuring that developing countries do not fall behind with the rate of technological advancement.
