The 15th two-day Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SETPLAN) hybrid conference will begin today in Bled, Slovenia.

SETPLAN will convene various politicians, academics and industry innovators such as simulations developer AVL. Additionally, the conference comes near the end of Slovenia’s European Council Presidency, which will be handed over to France at the end of 2021.

SETPLAN’s goal is to discuss the EU’s current climate and energy policies and individual member states’ COVID-19 recovery plans. These plans would combine short-term revival with a wider transition towards greener technologies. Research and development of new environmentally friendly technologies will be a key topic as the EU seeks to cut greenhouse emissions by 55% (from 1990 levels) by 2030, and to be completely climate neutral by 2050.

As the EU deals with a new surge in COVID-19 cases, there will likely be significant discussion on how to keep the bloc’s economy resilient in the face of increasing restrictions. In the short-term, the EU is likely to recover from the effects of COVID-19 due to the policies the conference will discuss. In the medium- to long-term, the emphasis on new green and digital technologies could make it the leading power in this field.
