19th International Conference on Cryptology and Network Security to begin
Today, the 19th International Conference on Cryptology and Network Security (CANS) begins virtually, bringing together European and international researchers and collaborators.
CANS will provide researchers a platform to discuss emerging cybersecurity issues in data security, malware detection, hacking, and privacy. Already having passed the GDPR online privacy standard for EU citizens, the EU is now working towards a unified approach to regulating and promoting digital innovation. With a “digital single market” as one of the EU’s top ten political priorities, the 27-member bloc is seeking to unify not only its $400 billion digital industry but also to ensure its future competitiveness.
Brussels is serious about catching up in the global digital arms race. On Friday, the EU announced the construction of a European Cybersecurity Competence Centre in Bucharest responsible for $2.5 billion in digital research spending to unify the disparate digital security approaches of hundreds of projects.
If Brussels is able to streamline and centralise the EU’s research efforts, there is a good chance it will be able to expand the European economy by $2.7 trillion by 2030 with robust digital security and to provide a viable digital alternative to cybersecurity standards and products being developed by Beijing and Washington.
