As midterm elections loom over the US political sphere, the Republican spring meeting will reach its conclusion today.

Historically, parties with control over the presidency lose congressional seats in the midterms due to backlash in public opinion. With unresolved scandals and controversial policies continuing to plague President Trump, many analysists have predicted major Republican losses in the House. In the Senate, Democrats face a daunting map and low voter turnout, making electoral success for them uncertain in the upper chamber.

This week’s meeting is a chance for the right to revamp a legislative platform overshadowed by Trump’s recent agenda. With only half a year left, Republican lawmakers will likely avoid risks, focusing on voter-friendly measures, like strengthening the safety net for farmers and potentially promising further tax cuts.

Controlling both chambers of Congress will be a double-edged sword for Republicans during midterms, with both the successes and failures falling on them. However, even the passage of their tax reform bill, a major Republican electoral promise, may not be enough to prevent the energised “blue wave” from sweeping the country come November.
