47th Session of the Committee on World Food Security to be held virtually
The 47th session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 47) will begin today.
Responsible for facilitating policy development and guidance on food security, CFS 47 brings together international stakeholders from a variety of sectors such as agriculture, education, health, water and sanitation to address multiple causes of malnutrition.
COVID-19 has exacerbated an economic crisis and a fragmented global food system, posing a severe threat to food security, particularly in developing countries. Last year, global food prices rose close to 20% while supply chain disruptions led to a reduction in quantity and quality of food.
CFS 47 will seek to advance the CFS mandate and approve the future work program before its February 11 end date. Expect discussions on actions to support developing economies to mitigate supply chain disruptions and high food prices. Additionally, discussions are expected on the preparations for the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit to align stakeholders around a common understanding of the food system framework and achieve the 2030 sustainable agenda. Today’s meeting will likely serve as preparation for the upcoming summit, primarily to elevate public discourse about the importance of transforming food systems. However, the main obstacle will be planning with the involvement of local governments.
