The 47th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is set to end today.

The summit was held under the theme “united against terrorism, for peace and development.” The OIC, the second largest intergovernmental organisation in the world after the UN with 57 member states on four continents, recognised that terrorism remains a global phenomenon that no country can fight alone. The discussions focused on counter-terrorism in Africa, especially in the Sahel region and Lake Chad basin.

Expect a push for OIC help to the conflict-ridden Sahel as part of an effort to combat growing insecurity and poverty in the region. The organisation is likely to call for substantial aid to the G5-Sahel in order to ensure the stabilisation of the region and move toward achieving the OIC 2025 Programme of Action, which seeks to improve inter-OIC trade and increase direct investments from members within the bloc.
