German President Steinmeier to visit Israel

Steinmeier Israel

German President Frank Walter Steinmeier will visit Israel today for talks with his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog.

Germany has taken a pro-Israeli stance on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, largely due to the special relationship the two countries have because of the end of the Second World War. However, there has also been pressure from figures such as German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock for restraint on the Israeli side due to the conflict’s heavy toll on civilians. Steinmeier is thus likely to continue offering Israel support while also pushing for restraint.

As a major player within the European Union, Germany’s stance not only reflects its historical ties with Israel but also aligns with broader EU policies. The European Union has consistently called for a two-state solution and stressed the importance of respecting international law in addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict. Germany, as part of this collective effort, is likely to continue offering support for Israel but also account for differing views domestically by pushing for humanitarian aid and continuing to assist in negotiations to free Israeli hostages captured in the initial Hamas raid on the 7th of October.
