Thai commission to hold meeting on AI
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin discusses AI Roadmap today.
Chaired by Srettha, the meeting at the National Digital Economy and Society Commission discusses the second phase of implementation of the country’s AI strategy from 2024 to 2027, which aims to build Thailand into ASEAN’s hub of AI to drive development.
Today’s meeting specifically addresses 7 more sectors including security, transportation, education, and more, with additional discussion focusing on establishing a unified digital ID platform which the country currently lacks.
To achieve his digital-first policy, Srettha has sought collaboration from the San Francisco APEC summit, in which he signed an MOU with Microsoft, formed a strategic partnership with Google, and attracted investment from Amazon Web Services. While these efforts help establish a strong infrastructure and increase local hi-tech employment, a recent MOU signature between Thailand and Huawei may cast further doubts on Western governments who boast clean internet and would enforce it through multilateral trade deals such as CPTPP which Thailand is not yet a member of.
By attracting industry giants to Thailand, Srettha achieved significant diplomatic success. However, the additional discussion on ID digitalization this time shows the government’s inefficiency in completing the project in the previous phase. Srettha has to convince its business partners that its government can deliver and justify its friendly gesture toward Huawei with its democratic allies.
