Meta updates AI policies
Meta will introduce new AI policies today.
It plans to use personal data from Meta-owned entities to train AI models without explicit consent. Advocacy group NOYB (None of Your Business) has filed 11 complaints against the tech giant, alleging a breach of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Meta may face several obstacles to enforcing their new AI policies. In March 2024, the European Parliament introduced the Artificial Intelligence Act, which contains restrictions on biometric categorization like “scraping” of facial data from the internet. The GDPR will likely impact the introduction of Meta’s new policies, should it be upheld by EU member states.
If Meta is found to be in breach of the GDPR, expect increased oversight and potential fines for the company in the short-term. It will likely need to make changes to its use of information policies to comply with EU regulations. Long-term, the EU’s stance could influence global data privacy norms. Differing approaches to data privacy between regions may lead to conflicts and necessitate new international agreements in the medium-to-long-term. Expect countries to uphold their digital sovereignty and push for localized data storage and processing to protect citizens’ rights.
