EU and Ukraine to sign security agreement

The European Union (EU) intends to conclude a security agreement with Ukraine during the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels. The document will outline military, financial and political long-term assistance to Ukraine that will stay in force until Ukraine becomes a member of NATO.

After 17 countries concluded similar bilateral treaties with Ukraine, the EU spent months negotiating its own agreement. Consensus was reached only after developing a legal workaround to bypass Hungary’s veto. The first part of the security agreement is believed to embrace issues related to the long-term provision of military equipment and training, as well as avenues for collaboration between EU and Ukrainian defense industries. The second section likely focuses on the Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, as well as the implementation of a system to hold Russia accountable for war crimes committed during the war.
