Anti-Ruto protests expected across Kenya

Activists will hold demonstrations in cities and towns across Kenya today to protest President William Ruto’s policies.

Ruto has been under heavy scrutiny for imposing controversial decrees during his two-year tenure as a president. Most recently, Ruto abandoned a proposed plan to raise taxes after major public discontent which led to arson attacks on the parliament building, and subsequently, a clash with the police that killed many. Today, Kenyan protestors—which consist mostly of younger generations—will once more hold a nationwide strike blocking access to main roads and demanding Ruto’s removal from office.

Instead of a tax hike, Ruto is seriously considering alternative measures during the short-to-medium term in order to find other ways to cut down on government spending and relieve the country’s dire economic situation. Such measures could likely be to issue bonds to borrow money with the sole purpose of maintaining tax rates. Additionally, expect Ruth’s popularity to continue to decrease especially among Gen Z Kenyans. As a direct result, this will likely prevent Ruto from taking any major executive actions moving forward that might receive popular opposition.
