Scottish pro-independence groups hold demonstrations as Brexit anger increases
As many as 10,000 pro-Scottish independence activists will gather for an ‘All Under One Banner’ march in Glasgow today to advocate for separating from the United Kingdom. This follows a series of independence marches that occurred across Scotland last year.
While the 2014 independence referendum was defeated, 45% of Scottish voters had elected to break away from Britain. Momentum for a second referendum has grown as Scotland’s population grows disillusioned with the chaotic Brexit process. Indeed, of the 62% of Scots who voted against Brexit, many now see an independent Scotland as the only hope of maintaining European Union membership.
In April, Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon ambitiously announced plans to enable a second referendum by 2021. However, significant obstacles remain as Mr Sturgeon requires the British government’s permission for another vote, to which UK Prime Minister Theresa May is staunchly opposed.
As London faces the harsh reality of Brexit, PM May is fearful of potentially losing Scotland if a second referendum is held. Another referendum could even spark a similar debate in Northern Ireland, which also voted against Brexit. Regardless, the likelihood of a second referendum will hinge on the passing of a Brexit deal. In any case, expect London to vehemently fight against a break-up of the United Kingdom.
