Legal experts to testify before House Judiciary Committee on Trump impeachment
Nine legal experts will testify before the US House Judiciary Committee today on the constitutional basis for impeaching President Donald Trump.
Last month, a series of officials testified regarding Trump’s threat to withhold military aid from Kyiv unless Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to investigate US presidential candidate Joe Biden for corruption.
Democrats will use the opinions articulated by the constitutional scholars today to fortify their case for impeachment. Expect the consensus to be that Trump’s actions in Ukraine were unconstitutional and are grounds for impeachment, as House Democrats selected the majority of the experts.
While the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives will almost certainly vote to impeach the president, the Republican-majority Senate is highly unlikely to vote to remove Trump from office.
Partisan politics are likely to disrupt the legislative process this month as government funding is set to expire on December 20 and bills like the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement demand action.
