South Carolina primary vote ahead of pivotal Super Tuesday contests
The South Carolina Democratic primary will be held today.
Left-leaning Senator Bernie Sanders has swept to victory in the last two primaries and he faced attacks from all sides in this week’s debate. However, it is former vice president Joe Biden who is tipped to emerge victorious in today’s vote—polling has Biden sitting at 36%, while Sanders trails with 18% of support.
South Carolina is the first state in the Democratic primaries to have a significant African American population, and a good showing will serve as a strong predictor of overall performance among that demographic. Sanders is currently the most likely candidate to take the Democratic nomination following his performance in all three primaries to date, however this may change if Biden wins big in today in South Carolina—many Democrats seek a more moderate candidate than Sanders to take them to the general election against President Donald Trump in November.
