US Vice President Kamala Harris will meet virtually with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) today.

The Biden administration has engaged with Mexico and Central America to adopt a regional approach to migration. The alarming influx of migrants and the humanitarian crises along the US-Mexico border has promoted a direct engagement between Mexico City and Washington.  Today’s meeting will broaden the scope of the US agenda to cover the complex array of economic, security and migration issues that define the US-Mexico relationship.

Expect AMLO and Harris to discuss issues related to migration, including the militarization of the US-Mexico border. Despite AMLO considering the migratory problem can only be resolved with social investment, it is unlikely that the Biden administration will support AMLO’s social programs in the region since it is not linked to their immigration agenda. Still, AMLO will continue to seek financial support for the expansion of Mexico’s tree-planting employment program into Central American nations to stem migration and provide work visas to immigrants. Washington may instead seek to address the underlying causes of northward migration, like corruption, which drives instability and lack of development by directing funds to civil organizations instead of governments.
