The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will host virtually the 154th Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives today.

The Committee is in charge of preparing the meetings of the UN Environment Assembly—the world’s highest decision-making body on the environment—and regularly reviews the implementation of its decisions. Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, the UNEP focuses on medical and humanitarian aid, transformational changes for nature and people and investing to modernize environmental governance.

Expect the UNEP to discuss ways to strengthen actions to protect and restore nature-based solutions to achieve the sustainable development goals and national plans for the climate COP26 in Glasgow later this year. Today’s meeting will provide an opportunity to implement stakeholder platforms to debate successful approaches that contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, including the goals related to eradicating poverty and sustainable patterns of consumption and production. In the medium-term, the UN Environment Program will likely focus on creating specific approaches to mitigate climate change, including adequate financing and adoption of modern technology. For instance, in the fight against plastic pollution, the partnership with Google and the adoption of machine learning to reveal a detailed view of plastic pollution will be high on the agenda.
