Final day for local community to voice opinions on wind turbine installation in Chile
Citizens of the city of Los Angeles in southern Chile are today expected to voice their opinions on the installation of a wind turbine farm in the city.
The installation is the latest energy development for the South American nation which has developed a reputation as a leader in the shift from fossil fuels to green energy solutions. The shift was spurred by a 2013 law which aimed to produce 20% of the country’s power from renewable sources and which was passed with broad approval by the government and citizens alike.
Given this widespread support for renewable energy, expect the citizens of Los Angeles to grant their seal of approval to the wind farm. Experts hope the plant will generate 114 megawatts once brought online, enough to power most of the city and surrounding area. If successful, this wind farm will be the first of many in the region.
In addition to more wind farms, expect a national expansion of solar energy networks, primarily in the country’s north. Northern Chile—home to the Atacama Desert—has some of the highest levels of solar incidence in the world which experts believe could be harnessed to power the entire country.
