President of Mongolia Ukhnaa Khurelsukh and President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in to hold virtual meeting
President of Mongolia Ukhnaa Khurelsukh and President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in will hold a joint online meeting today, after a four-year hiatus.
South Korea is part of a regional FTA network with ASEAN countries. As a non-ASEAN member, Mongolia has a separate economic partnership with South Korea dating back to 2011.
Presidents Khurelsukh and Moon are expected to discuss enhancing this relationship to that of a strategic partnership, following in the footsteps of the US. The focus will remain political rather than economic in the short- to medium-term while regional security remains at the forefront of Moon’s agenda before the end of his term next spring.
Meanwhile, the Mongolian Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Beijing in late July, as China grows particularly wary of Mongolia strengthening its international ties.
Moon will continue to foster a closer relationship with South Korea’s partners in East Asia. Last year, he established a regional initiative focused on managing future health crises, inviting the US, China and Japan in addition to Mongolia. Expect some improvement of current disease-control management in the medium-term, but minimal change in the long-term as long as China pushes back on transparency in the health domain.
