EU environment and climate change ministers will meet in Brussels today.

The ministers will discuss the EU’s climate package called ‘Fit for 55’, battery regulations released earlier this year and the Union’s new soil strategy.

The Fit for 55 package implemented obligations throughout EU Climate Law to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to levels in 1990. Expect discussions today to consider the sufficiency and capacity of the package to achieve these goals as well as how it may be strengthened, not relegated, in years to come. CO2 standards for vehicles is one proposal that may be implemented.

Another proposal on the table is for the new battery regulations which would promote a sustainable industry and circular economy of batteries whilst simultaneously ensuring high standards of environmental and health protection.

For the soil strategy, the ministers will deliberate strategies for safeguarding the protection, restoration and sustainable usage of soil to promote healthy EU ecosystems by 2050.
