Iran to negotiate compensation for crash victims
The deadline for Iran to begin negotiating reimbursements for the victims of the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 crash is today.
Representatives from Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ukraine have demanded Iran present reparations to the families of the crash’s 176 victims. The four nations are issuing demands as their citizens died in the crash. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) shot down the airliner two years ago with a surface-to-air missile amidst the 2019-2020 Persian Gulf crisis. The Iranian government contends that the IRGC believed that the plane was a cruise missile.
While Tehran has announced that it will provide compensation to the families of the crash’s victims, it is highly unlikely for Tehran to reach a full agreement with the four countries regarding the amount of compensation. This is mainly due to Iran’s current economic recession caused by Western sanctions.
Tehran’s offer will likely fall short, resulting in a disagreement with the group. This will further deteriorate Iran’s relations with the countries, which might prompt them to take measures against Iran in the medium-term, in accordance with international law.
