Indian External Affairs Minister visits Malawi
India’s Minister of External Affairs, Vellamvelly Muraleedharan will kick off a two-day visit to Malawi today.
Muraleedharan will meet with Malawi President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo. The meeting seeks to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries. Topics covered will include mutual cooperation in health, energy, trade, and economic investments. A top priority is a review of the progress of development assistance projects under the Government of India Lines of Credit (LoCs) and Grants.
South-South Cooperation has been a significant component of India’s foreign policy, especially towards Malawi. Since 2008, India has extended USD $396 million to infrastructure development projects there. An agreement between the Government of Malawi and India’s Export-Import Bank was signed on June 12, 2020 to develop Malawi’s drinking water supply. In March of 2021, India donated 50,000 doses of Indian Covid vaccines as part of Covid-19 assistance plans.
Bilateral ties between the two countries are expected to continue to develop as India has expressed a desire to help Malawi reach middle-income status by 2030. Sharing of aid, technology, academic knowledge, and expertise will be an expected feature of relations between the two countries moving forward.
