The launch of the ‘Marches of the Millions’ mass demonstration in Sudan is expected to begin today across the country.

Following regular protests since last October’s military coup, the ‘Marches of the Millions’ aims to be a major display of civil disobedience in protest against the ruling military junta.

Due to its anticipated size, the nation-wide protest may lead to border shutdowns in various parts of the country. As a high security event, police forces are likely to enforce harsh crackdowns on protests, especially given the recent trend of widespread injuries to protesters due to stampedes and stone-throwing. Additionally, expect security forces to use violent measures to confront demonstrators as tensions between the police and civilian activists continue to rise.

As previous protests—even ones of a similar nationwide magnitude—have failed to oust the junta from power, it is unlikely that today’s march will spur immediate political transition. Protests are likely to continue in across the country however, which may encourage the international community to increase pressure on the military government to return to civilian rule.
