Afghan government to attend Russian peace talks
Afghan delegates will attend the Russian-led peace talks in Moscow today.
Afghanistan will be left with a power vacuum following the planned withdrawal of US troops. Afghanistan’s national military and intelligence services have proven insufficient in the government’s fight against terrorism and the Taliban insurgency, as militant attacks continue to occur frequently. With the hope of maintaining stability, the Afghan government is set to visit two peace conferences in Moscow and Istanbul respectively. While there was minimal progress made during the Taliban-Afghanistan negotiations hosted in Doha, Kabul is preparing to discuss prospective peace plans in today’s assembly supervised by the Kremlin.
In this peace conference, attendees will provide basic strategies for the Afghan government to follow for its counterterrorism efforts. Although the proposals will be important steps for Kabul to achieve stability, it’s unlikely internal violence will de-escalate in the short- to medium-term. The Taliban will most likely act indifferently and be unwilling to capitulate on the demands of peacemakers, as that has been the case in previous peace attempts. Instead, the Taliban’s proclamation will likely restate its desires for the future of Afghanistan, as the Taliban’s driving interest is to acquire international recognition and become the de jure authority in Afghanistan.
