Individuals over the age of 18 in France are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as of today.

The decision comes amidst a consistent fall in France’s COVID-19 cases from its second peak in mid-April. Most recently, intensive cases of the virus have fallen to 3,028 and overall hospitalizations to 16,847.

The downward trend in both statistics is due to Paris’ successful vaccine rollout. With no reported supply issues, 16% of the population has been fully vaccinated and 37% has received at least one shot. Given this success, France is now preparing to reopen to US tourists beginning June 6th and has pledged to donate 30 million shots to South Africa through the COVAX initiative.

Adults in France had already been eagerly searching for leftover shots at vaccination centers using a host of new apps and websites created to maximize inoculation efficiency. Expect France’s broadened vaccine eligibility to satisfy this demand, maintaining the country’s consistent upward trend in vaccinations and downward trend in COVID-19 cases. Nevertheless, Paris is not out of the woods yet as plateaus in vaccination rollouts normally occur after 60% of the population has been inoculated. Thus, slowdowns in France’s rollout will likely occur in the long-term.
