Another Ramstein format meeting begins today.
Also known as the Ukraine Defense Contact Group the forum was established in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Ramstein format serves as a platform for Ukraine’s allies to coordinate military aid and strategic support.
Since its inception, meetings have alternated between in-person and virtual formats. The previous October meeting saw high-level participation, including US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, underscoring its strategic importance.
The meeting is expected to consolidate Ukraine’s defense capabilities ahead of expected incursion in the Kursk region. Discussions are expected to focus on advanced weaponry, ammunition supplies, and logistical support. In the short term, expect the US to pressure European allies to enhance their contributions, ensuring a unified front against Russian aggression. While the meeting may reaffirm Western solidarity, diverging national interests within the coalition remain a potential challenge. In the long-term, expect Kiev to continue to leverage this platform for securing long-term military partnerships and advocate for deeper security and economic integration with the European Union. On the other hand, under the new Trump administration expect a more conciliatory US which will likely capitalise on the slowdown in the Russian economy to deter Russian aggression through economic diplomacy.
