As Hong Kong’s legislature goes into recess, protestors expect on the streets again
Hong Kong’s Legislative Council will go on recess today as protesters threaten to re-emerge this weekend in the ongoing fight for Hong Kong and its democratic future.
Protests against a proposed extradition law, currently placed on hold, have persisted since June 9. The protests have included the storming of the Legislative Council as well as violent acts of vandalism.
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has advised the police to enforce the law and charge those engaging in violent activities, sparking tensions in the nation.
Lam has yet to respond to parallel traders diluting the nation’s economy–a key issue which has been raised and will impact Hong Kong’s economic growth.
The pressure caused by opposition groups and protesters has forced Lam to call the bill “dead”, but a formal withdrawal of the legislation has yet to occur. This weekend will see an increase in the number of protestors as they push for the government to formalise the removal of the bill and look into other grievances such as trade litigation.
