Boeing and Airbus dominate Paris Air Show orders despite new industry entrants
The global aviation industry will be on show in France today for the annual Paris Air Show, where new entrants are expected to challenge industry leaders Boeing and Airbus.
The world’s largest aviation industry event usually sees aircraft orders reach or exceed $100 billion annually. Airbus is expected to capitalise on the grounding of Boeing’s 737 Max aircraft and lift its market share above 45% this year. Boeing, which has long dominated the industry, has posted flat orders for the past two quarters, largely due to a loss of confidence over the 737 Max scandal. Boeing’s struggles could also provide an opportunity for new entrants in the industry.
New industry trends, such as hybrid and electric technology, could also make appearances. The potential unveiling of hybrid technology from Airbus is aimed at capitalising on aerospace trends designed to reduce emissions and move to aircraft power by electric or hybrid engines.
For both Boeing and Airbus, this wider industry shift will be essential to protecting their market positions, but will also rely heavily on industrial breakthrough by suppliers over the coming decade.
