Bolsonaro Out campaign to mobilize nationally today
Organizing committee members of the Bolsonaro Out movement are calling for a national mobilization of their supporters today.
The primary goal of the Bolsonaro Out movement is to remove Bolsonaro from office under the pretext of his handling of the COVID-19 crisis, a crumbling economy, and rising concern about Brazilian democracy. Bolsonaro Out also seeks additional COVID financial and material aid for Brazilians.
Brazil’s COVID-19 death toll surpassed 500,000 on June 23rd. The recent cancellation of a vaccine agreement with India has sparked serious corruption allegations against Bolsonaro and the Ministry of Health.
As support plummeted, Bolsonaro invoked a national security law—held over from the previous military dictatorship—to censor and detain dissenters. The government’s regression to dictatorship-like tactics, and failure to resolve the COVID-19 crisis, prompted Brazilians to take to the streets.
Today’s mobilization is likely to further agitate the anti-Bolsonaro movement to undertake larger and more aggressive demonstrations. Violent police crackdowns are the likely Bolsonaro response. In the short-term, Bolsonaro may be charged with graft over the India vaccine deal cancellation. In the medium-term, Brazil’s 2022 presidential election is expected to see former president Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva retake the presidential office, ousting Bolsonaro.
