Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to face off in TV debate as they vie to be UK PM
Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt will debate head-to-head on British television today as they vie for leadership of the Conservative Party.
160,000 Conservative Party members must submit their postal votes by July 22, with a winner to be announced on July 23.
The two candidates are expected to spar on five key areas: alternative exit deals and no-deal Brexit budgets, corporate and middle class tax rates, migrant quotas, benefit packages offered to immigrants and defence spending budgets.
Mr Hunt has campaigned on his experience in government, highlighting that he has held more cabinet posts than Mr Johnson and had a successful tenure as both culture secretary and health secretary.
Mr Johnson has pointed to his strong ties with the United States, predicated on his close relationship with US President Donald Trump and his success with small businesses and the promotion of protectionism.
According to the most recent poll data surveying party members, Mr Johnson is expected to attract approximately 67.4% of support to Mr Hunt’s 29.1%. Indeed, it would be a surprise to see anyone but Boris Johnson take up residence in 10 Downing Street come July 23.
