Chairman of Nepal’s Communist Party concludes visit to Venezuela
Former Nepali Prime and Communist Party Chairman Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal concludes a trip to Venezuela today.
The former PM participated in the two-day Anti-Fascist Parliamentary Forum held in Caracas. The forum was attended by more than 300 legislators from 70 countries.
The forum discussed a variety of topics including imperialism and the resurgence of extremist ideologies and hoped to guide developing countries’ approach towards neo-colonialism relations.
Although Nepal is unlikely to formulate great interests in Latin America, the succession of leftist governments in the country and their historical efforts to counterbalance the influence of regional powers in Asia, are expected to form a mutual narrative with developing countries from Latin America.
Shared views on neo-colonialism, economic dependency and new ways forms of aggression, mainly coercive measures, are expected to be used by Nepal to enhance its soft power in the medium term. In the long term, Nepal will aim to yield its clout through multilateral agency, focusing on climate change, sustainable tourisms, LGTBQ+ rights and conflict resolution. However, Nepal will continue to face challenges regarding geopolitical competition between India and China. Speculation regarding the country’s possible rapprochement with China and the Belt & Road Initiative may weaken its trade and investment relations with India and the US, which can hamper the country’s own economic development and role in the international community.
