China, Russia to hold strategic security talks amid economic measures from US
Member of the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Political Bureau, Yang Jiechi will co-chair the 14th round of China-Russia strategic security talks in Moscow today with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.
The last round of talks, held in July last year, saw the two parties agree to bolster energy cooperation by improving business connections on issues such as the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. The talks also saw the initiation of a joint space exploration plan and Putin awarding Xi with the Order of St Andrew the Apostle.
But this year, it is US trade aggression that is bringing Beijing and Moscow back together. As regional leaders of the Eurasian supercontinent, China and Russia share similar strategic concerns over the future of Afghanistan, North Korea and Africa. Momentum for cooperation between Beijing and Moscow has continued to build in light of rising US trade aggression—and will likely continue to do so.
China and Russia’s relationship is currently at an all-time high, with increasing US aggression acting as the impetus needed to further strengthen them. After the meeting concludes on August 17th expect continued Putin-Xi dialogue. There we are likely to see a formal response to Washington’s sanctions signed.
