The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and NATO will jointly host the 17th annual NATO Conference on Arms Control, Disarmament and Weapons of Mass Destruction Non-Proliferation.

Chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, key matters to be discussed include WMD arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation. More specifically, three panels will address: the threat of chemical weapons, the missile challenge, and NATO’s contribution to the key issues in the 2030 agenda.

As the international community grapples with a turbulent and violent situation in Afghanistan, expect to hear calls for increased vigilance against illicit arms transfers to non-state actors, a transparent nod to the United States.

Also, expect serious discussions around China’s growing nuclear arsenal and its recent construction of new missile silos. If Beijing equips itself with a nuclear arsenal to rival the United States and Russia, tripolarity will likely affect nuclear stability across the board. In a shift from previous 2021 communiqué that did not mention China at all, NATO has affirmed their commitment to “engage China, with a view to defending the security interests of the alliance… [as their] growing influence and international policies can present challenges that we need to address together as an alliance.”
