High-profile EU leaders will today hold a conference in Brussels with NGOs, private companies and researchers to discuss strategies to combat climate change and establish long-term targets.

The meeting pushes forward the agenda of the 2015 Paris Climate Accord by setting goals for 2050. It will inform the EU’s updated proposal on its 2011 climate change roadmap, to be presented at the UN annual climate change conference in November.

Since June, EU leaders, including 10 mayors of major European capitals as of yesterday, have called for the bloc to achieve net-zero carbon emission and to cap rising temperatures at 1.5C. Discussions today will focus on how organisations can take part in prioritising climate change in their agendas by, for example, establishing future maximum costs now and making the transition from non-renewable energy to renewable and eventually to clean energy.

The EU is currently already behind its goal to cut 40% of emissions by 2030; the proposal due in November must ensure that the sacrifices industries make will be well worth it.
