Former US president Donald Trump will speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) today.

Capping off a three-day conference, Trump’s speech will set the tone of the Republican Party and conservative movement going into the 2022 midterm elections and the next presidential election cycle. The Capital insurrection on January 6 has exposed the divide within the Republican Party and split them into two camps: those that still support Trump and those seeking to distance themselves from his inflammatory behavior. Some prominent Republicans have stated that Trump should not be allowed to set the future of the party.

The Republican Party is currently seeking to craft a new narrative to move forward into the 2022 midterms, where the majority control of the House of Representatives will be decided. Trump may influence this narrative by campaigning against Republicans that supported his impeachment after January’s Capitol breach, pitting these Republicans against the party’s grassroots supporters. If Trump pursues this strategy, it will reduce the chances that the Republican Party can achieve a majority in the House. Continued Democrat control would mean that President Joe Biden’s policies would have an easier time passing through Congress.
