The legislative assembly of the Indian state of Uttarakhand will convene today for its budget session.

The state government will present its budget proposal, which has been drawn up with public input. The proposal seeks to boost a number of key industries such as agriculture and tourism and to increase tax revenue, with the aim of building on the state’s strengths and making its economy one of the top state economies in the country by 2025. This is the first such proposal of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s government, which came to power in March 2022 following an electoral victory in the legislative assembly by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though by a slimmer margin than in the last legislative election.

If the budget passes, it would present a major policy victory for the BJP at both state and federal levels. Looking forward to the next legislative election, slated to be in 2027, such a victory would increase the chances of taking more seats in the assembly. Expect that this will in turn embolden the BJP to more strongly contest state and other local elections in mostly opposition-friendly Southern states to ensure greater continuity of policy between federal and local policies.
