Libyan Prime Minister visits Morocco

Libyan Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibeh will begin an official visit to Morocco today.

During the visit, Dbeibeh is expected to meet with Moroccan officials, including Prime Minister Saadeddine Othmani.

Expect Dbeibeh to use the trip to reinforce the nascent political bond between Moroccan leadership and the fledgling government of Libya. Speaker of the internationally recognized Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) Aguila Saleh has already traveled to Rabat and has met with Moroccan government officials twice this month. This trip is viewed as an extension of these efforts. The HoR remains fragile and is opposed militarily and politically by multiple Libyan factions including Berber tribal groups and the opposition Libyan National Army led by General Khalifa Haftar. By gaining the support of the governments of surrounding nations, the HoR is better able to position itself as the rightful governing power of Libya, allowing Dbeibeh to further cement himself as the country’s lawful head-of-state.

Expect discussions to center around the planned economic forum between the two nations which leaders hope will reconnect the economies of the two nations and foster further political and diplomatic cooperation moving forward, as well as discussing the reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Tripoli.
