UN Hosts Libyan Draft Constitution Meeting
Heads of Libya’s two houses of parliament, the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, will meet with UN Special Advisor on Libya, Stephanie Williams, in Geneva today.
The meeting will discuss the draft constitutional framework for elections. This follows the recent Joint Committee meeting held in Cairo where lawmakers from both chambers of parliament came to consensus on 137 articles of the country’s draft constitution.
Libya’s political landscape remains complex. Elections were originally scheduled in December 2021 but fell apart. Constitutional disagreements earlier this year further delayed progress towards elections. The country’s competing government quarreled over the legitimacy of interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah’s mandate. The Fathi Bashaga led government insisted his mandate expired when the election scheduled in December was not held. Last month, tension between rival factions escalated, with armed militias mobilizing in the western region.
Today’s meeting is a step in the right direction for the future of Libya’s politics. It is likely that the meeting will conclude with Libya obtaining a finalized draft constitution. Parliament will likely approve the draft and proceed with a path towards elections.
