EU and Ukraine to sign security agreement
The European Union (EU) intends to conclude a security agreement with Ukraine during the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels. The document will outline military, financial and political long-term assistance to Ukraine that will stay in force until Ukraine becomes a member of NATO.
After 17 countries concluded similar bilateral treaties with Ukraine, the EU spent months negotiating its own agreement. Consensus was reached only after developing a legal workaround to bypass Hungary’s veto. The first part of the security agreement is believed to embrace issues related to the long-term provision of military equipment and training, as well as avenues for collaboration between EU and Ukrainian defense industries. The second section likely focuses on the Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, as well as the implementation of a system to hold Russia accountable for war crimes committed during the war.
Zelensky’s adept diplomacy has garnered support from numerous countries worldwide and brought Ukraine closer to a European future. Today’s security agreement and the beginning of EU accession talks highlight Ukraine’s growing EU ties. While Brussels pledges to continue supplying lethal weapons to Kyiv, Russia will continue seeking new partners in Asia, as demonstrated by its pact with North Korea last week.
