A videoconference of EU space ministers to discuss Europe’s role in the global space economy will be held today. The conference is expected to allow ministers to exchange views on how the EU can enhance the competitiveness of its space industry and play a larger role in shaping international regulatory regimes.

The Space Council is a joint and concomitant meeting of the EU Council and of the European Space Agency (ESA) Council at the Ministerial level. The Council has highlighted that the European space sector reaches beyond publicly financed programs as it is driven by commercial space activities. Furthermore, it has emphasised the need for space entrepreneurship by promoting access to finance and funding opportunities, particularly for start-ups as well as small and medium-sized enterprises.

The conclusions adopted by the Council earlier this month noted the emergence of a highly competitive European space industry and growing supply chains, which enables the EU to participate in the global growth of the space economy. Expect today’s meeting to further stress the importance of coordinated actions by the EU, the European Space Agency and their respective member states to foster European space autonomy, security and resilience.
