First 2024 US Presidential debate tonight between Biden and Trump
The first 2024 Presidential debate will be held tonight between President Biden and former President Trump in Atlanta, Georgia.
This is their first debate since 2020, in what is the first rematch election since 1956. A second debate will be held 10 September.
As always, foreign policy will be a key topic for both candidates, uniquely with their own Presidential doctrines to stand behind. The ‘Trump doctrine’ formed around a platform of nativist populism, accented by a distain for democracies and admiration for autocracies. The ‘Biden Doctrine’ has been the reverse, and with the advent of the Ukraine War, Biden has drawn the line between the adversaries and the allies of America.
Expect argument over who was the ‘toughest on China’ in their first term. Ukraine will draw the most time and Trump once again will argue that his relations with Putin would have and will stop the war. Should these elections succeed in producing a second Trump presidency, he will likely reduce Ukrainian military and economic aid to a trickle, whilst arguing European partners should fill the void. If Biden were to win, and conversely lose the Senate, then Ukrainian aid would also slow.
