Following resignation of Slovakian PM, new government to be instated
Following the resignation of long-time Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico last week, a new cabinet is expected to be appointed today by his successor, Peter Pellegrini.
Fico’s resignation comes after massive public outcry over the suspicious death of an investigative journalist last month. Tens of thousands of citizens have taken to the streets in recent weeks in what has become the largest public protest since the fall of communism.
Although Fico resigned in the hopes of quelling the unrest, little has changed. Much of the public regards Pellegrini as more of the same. With demonstrations erupting for the third week in a row on Friday to demand early elections, the pressure now falls onto Pellegrini to stabilise the country.
To avoid further distress, expect him to choose a non-partisan interior minister to oversee the reporter’s murder investigation. However, the ruling coalition faces growing internal divisions so do not expect resolution any time soon. Look to the no-confidence vote next week to reveal more about the Slovakian government’s fate.
